Music Update: February 4th, 2010


Those winter months that just passed proved to be some productive hibernation for quite a few artists and labels, as many new albums and large compilations made their way to the digital shelf this week. PC SYNERGY's "Jont Venture", SOULPHICTION's "Featured Artist" comp on Sonar Kollektiv, LIMACON's "Tarry Not" album on Thoughtless, Fresh Meat's "When Bad People Cook Good Food", and both of Strictly Rhythm's 20 Year comps--"The Originals" and "The Remixes" are some of the highlights on the album front--read on for more Picks from across the Sounds.....

The Funk

DJ HOMEWRECKER made a big splash several years ago with best selling EP's on Guesthouse, AJ and Scoreless After Two. After a short hiatus, we welcome him back with open arms with his disco fueled remix of "You Will Never Know Me" on Look At You; the Brazilian duo ANHANGURERA are showing up all over the place, and their latest stop is "King & Queen" for West Coast label Tango; the Midwest cities of Chicago and Milwaukee come together with FRANK SOLANO's "Spotted Now" on Soul Fuel, featuring ORGANIZED CRIME on the remix; 6th Sense sub-label 1999 kick things off with the "Manchester Connection", which features tracks from HECTOR MORALEZ and a YSE remix of RHYTHM PLATE; DJ SOYDAN has a jackin' three-tracker, "Ne Var" for his Limon label; Blatt Traxx and MEL ROSARIO both keep their string of hits going with the funky sound of "Coffee & Blunts"; more remixes of DJ SNEAK's "Funky Rhythm", including CHUCK DANIELS and the old-school feel of the Hip-House remix; THE HOUSE INSPECTORS from Down Under remix HUSKY's solo single "As I Go Along" for Blockhead; TOMMY LARGO's Stompy-exclusive "Everything Is Jazz" is the best of what he has to offer on Guesthouse; and WATTIE GREEN's "Sea Lion Woman" on Flapjack is a spinoff of the single "It's Like That" on Juiced, and has added REAL TIME HAND MOTION and BRYAN JONES remixes.

Soul Full

In addition to the Strictly Rhythm compilations, there were many stand out EP's on the Soul Full side--MIGUEL MIGS' adds one of the all-time House masters, IAN POOLEY, to his Salted Music label with Ian's remix of FRANKSEN & TOM WAX's "Bodyworker"; MATT FLORES & TYREE COOPER's captivating release "Shining Lights" was a hit last year on vinyl and is now available digitally; DJ RICO drops two superb house tracks on "Walk On" under his DEEP Y'ALL alias; KERRI CHANDLER adds another outstanding compilation to the Nite Grooves collection with his "Essentials" selection; MONODELUXE releases a fine assortment of sweet, jazzy house on the "In House Session Vol 2" for his Italian Vibe Boutique label; MARKUS ENOCHSON and his unique version of Soul is showcased with four tracks on his "Enochson EP" for Sonar Kollektiv; the latest release to the always versatile Irma label is "Sophisticated" from PHONIC.LAB; the lovely vocals of MICHELLE WEEKS grace "My Change Is Gonna Come" on RUBEN MANCIAS' Devotion label; and we've added more timeless back catalog from FRANCK ROGER's Real Tone and Earthrumental labels.

"Alcatraz" is the latest single for TRENTEMOLLER and KASPER BJORKE's new label HFN Music, and their third release features outstanding remixes from JIMPSTER, KENTON SLASH DEMON and ZOMBIE DISCO SQUAD. We expect many good releases in the future from this label, including the upcoming album due out this spring. ADULTNAPPER & MR C form SYCOPHANT SLAGS and turn out the EP "Keep Off" on Poker Flat, with WIGHNOMY BROTHERS and REBOOT providing remixes; the funky minimal sound is hitting this week with RAY OKPARA's "Brainows" on Soweso, as well as MARCIN CZUBALA & HUGO's "Zoo Comunale" on Mobilee; ARGY's These Days imprint release the two track EP "Universal Consciousness"; the DONK BOYS and STYLE OF EYE are two of the remixers of "French Jeans" on the brand new label Discobelle; PIRAHNAHEAD gets some serious moody vocals on the "Self Conscience" single featured on London's Third Ear; DAPAYK sorts out a twisted tech house remix of "Grandslam" for Frankfurt's Kaufe Musik; ALEX SMOKE drops "LuxPlus" is the latest EP for his Hum + Haw label; ACID PAULI drops two beaters on his "Smaul08 EP"; our local friend ALLAND BYALLO joins the Missive family with the moody sounds of "My City" with ALEXKID providing the remix; LEROSA's "Night Radio" EP on Uzuri stands out as one of our favorites for the week; and we're excited that we have added 8bit to our wide selection of quality labels, with many more to come.

Down-N-Out

JOSHUA IZ's downtempo alias J-BOOM "Starts the Party" with nine tracks of wicked downbeat; LORENZ RHODE's "Something Hot" gets remixed by MATTIE SAFER and Bugz in the Attic's SEIJI; TOKYO BLACK STAR remix ARNO E MATHIEU's "Heritage" for Clima Records; DABEULL's goes to the "Freaky Show" on Mullet Records; PETE HERBERT, ROLAND SCHWARZ, HERB LF and KEN HAYAKAWA each lend a single to the "Sophisticated Sass Sounds" EP; JESSE SAUNDERS goes on a hip-hop vibe with his single "Nasty"; well known for their many deep house productions, THE RURALS also prove they know how to relax on their huge downtempo compilation "Rural Soul"; the HIP KID is "Spinning" some disco funk on Cold Rockin; and ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK's pioneering "Ce N'est Q'un Debut" from 1984 is Remastered and Rereleased for digital consumption on Hot Elephant.
